I am worried ...

First, I watched Al Gore's movie. Then I read that Ellesmere Island is melting. Now polar bears are going to force the Bush administration to face up to climate change. And now ... el Nino is back.

Its been a scary month.

As I got ready to go for my walk at lunch, my co-worker said, "Isn't this great weather?"

I replied, "No, its kind of scary actually."

His look of incredularity matched his reply, "I think this is great."

Am I really that out of touch? Am I the only one that is frightened by this wave of warm weather? Maybe its my training as a biologist ... or maybe its that inner paranoid part of me that thinks that every blemish is cancer ... or the fear that I'll have to escape to the hills just like Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen did when they saved the world from communism in "Red Dawn". Well, maybe Stephen King's super flu will break out just like it did in the Stand and then we won't have to worry about global warming.

But seriously ... I am worried.

I am worried that our seeds won't germinate because they need a period of cold to realize its grow time. I am worried there will be a drought because the snow didn't come and replenish the water table in the spring. And I realize that this may not happen tomorrow. But I am worried that I've brought my kids into a world that we've already broken.

I am worried. And I need to figure out how to fix it.
